Music & Traditions

Music has always been a part of the important moments in my life, even if I didn’t always notice it at first. One tradition that stands out to me is the music played at family cookouts and reunions. The vibe is always fun and full of energy, and the music plays a big role in that. The kind of music we play is usually a mix of old-school R&B, soul, gospel, and newer hip-hop.Artists like Frankie Beverly & Maze, Mary J. Blige, and Kirk Franklin are regulars on the playlist. Sometimes, one of my uncles will DJ using his phone and a Bluetooth speaker, and he takes requests from everybody. Other times, someone will just start singing along or dancing, and it turns into a whole moment. The music brings people together it’s not just background noise, it’s part of the celebration. It sets the mood, helps people connect, and reminds us of past gatherings. One song that always gets played is “Before I Let Go” by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. It’s like a signal that the party is really happening. People start dancing, singing along, and just enjoying the moment. That song feels like tradition it’s been played at every cookout I can remember, and it brings everyone together.

When I graduated high school, one song I had to play was “Thug Motivation” by Rod Wave. It wasn’t part of the ceremony, but I played it afterward to celebrate. That song speaks to the grind, the struggle, and finally making it through. It felt like the perfect soundtrack for that moment leaving behind all the stress and hard work and stepping into a new chapter. It’s emotional but also motivating, and it made me feel proud of how far I’d come.

When I’m with my friends, music is always part of the vibe. One song we’ve been playing a lot lately is “Somebody Loves Me” by Drake featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR. It’s smooth, chill, and has that late-night ride feel to it. Whether we’re just hanging out, driving around, or kicking back after a long day, this song sets the mood. It’s one of those tracks that makes you feel connected, like we’re all in the same moment together. It’s not tied to a formal tradition, but it’s definitely part of our own little ritual when we hang out

Even though I haven’t been to a lot of weddings or funerals yet, I know music will play a big role when I do get married. I’d want the music to reflect who I am and what I love a mix of R&B and gospel, something that feels personal and real. One song that has to be played at my wedding is “Matrimony” by Wale featuring Usher. It’s not going to be my walkout song, but it means something to me and fits the vibe I want real, emotional, and smooth.

  1. Hey Kimauri! Thanks for sharing your music and traditions! I loved how you shared about your family cookouts and reunions and how the song, "Before I Let Go" plays a role in that! That sounds so fun! Everyone in the older generation of my family only speak Russian so out family reunions consist of my grandma whipping out her accordian and singing Russian/Ukrainian church songs. I also love how you included a song for your future wedding! I have so many picked out as well! Overall, I enjoyed reading through your post and listening to the music you shared!

  2. he song you mentioned, "Thug Motivation," is really important to me too. It was one of the songs that helped push me through sports all throughout high school and even into college. Hearing you bring it up brought back a lot of memories and motivation from that time in my life.
