Music & Me
Hi guys, I am Kimauri Chatman a sophomore who is from Columbia, SC. Ever since I was a little girl, I have always dreamed of having a career in law. Now, as a pre-law student with aspirations to become a criminal defense attorney, I am working hard to turn that dream into reality. Alongside my studies, I play basketball, which has taught me valuable lessons about discipline, perseverance, and teamwork.
Growing up in an environment where many people lacked career plans or support for their futures made me determined to choose a different path. Witnessing these challenges inspired me to think deeply about what I wanted for myself and how I could help others. Being the youngest child in my family gave me a unique perspective I learned by watching those around me and gained insight into how to the world works and how things can be improved.
These experiences have shaped my passion for law and my desire to make a positive impact. I am committed to becoming a criminal defense attorney so I can advocate for those who need support and guidance, and help create a better future for my community.
So while I completed the assignments listen to some of the song choices I put and see if you have any different opinions.
1. An example (or two) of something that I like right now: I like listening to “Xhosen” by Hunxho because the song’s energy and it motivating definitely while playing basketball or getting ready for a game. It helps me stay focused and confident on the court. It talks about overcoming struggles and achieving success, which inspires me to keep pushing my self.“Already won” by Rod Wave ft Lil Durk is also my favorite because it just inspires me to stay grateful for my progress and reminds me that hard times can lead to better days.
2. An example of music thats deeply important to me. “Born Tired” by Jhené Aiko is important to me because it speaks to the feeling of being exhausted by life challenges, yet still finding the strength to keep going. The lyrics are gentle and comforting, reminding me that it’s okay to feel tired sometimes just don’t give up. Her voice also is so sooting and calming. So when I feel overwhelmed or stressed I play this.
3. An example of a music I don't really connect with. I don’t really connect with Travis Scott’s song “Wake Up” just cause the lyrics overall vibe doesn’t resonate with my personal experiences or emotions. The song’s energy focuses on partying and a certain lifestyle that doesn’t relate to me, so it doesn’t feel meaningful or inspiring to me. I prefer songs that I can relate to or just that I like that’s why “Wake Up” isn’t a song I feel connected to.

You spoke about how you see yourself as change. You shared how growing up, your environment didn’t necessarily encourage you to be the best you could be, yet through your academic and athletic journey you continue to push against those strongholds and stereotypes. The song you chose that stood out to me as the most interesting was “Xhosen” by Hunxho. You can hear the pain in his voice and the way he pours his story into the lyrics—talking about his past, the challenges he faces now, and even questioning if what he’s doing is really fulfilling him. When he says, “why do I hate rap” even though it’s what provides for him, that line stuck with me because it shows the uncertainty of walking a path you’re not always sure about. I connected it back to your idea of being “change”—as college students, we don’t have a manual for life, and figuring out your way can feel impossible sometimes. But like Hunxho ends the song saying, “I’m Xhosen,” I think you are also claiming that truth for yourself. Despite the odds, you’re finding your way and striving for better.
ReplyDeleteThe song I personally liked the best was “Already Won” by Rod Wave ft. Lil Durk. You said it inspires you to stay grateful for your progress and reminds you that hard times can lead to better days, and I felt that deeply too. Rod Wave has such a soulful way of rapping—he doesn’t shy away from pouring out pain and emotion, and I’ve always admired how he broke the mold of what rap “should” sound like. That vulnerability itself is powerful. The message of the song really stuck with me: “I already won.” It’s a reminder not to stay stuck on what went wrong but to recognize what you’ve already overcome. Like you, I also find that affirmation motivating—it makes you pause, reflect, and realize that surviving hard times in itself is a kind of victory.
Hey Kimauri! I find your passion and ambition to go after what you want amazing. I wish you luck in the journey ahead and to keep that mindset. I'm sure it will take you far. I also find Born Tired to be my favorite of the songs you put on here, not just because of the sentiment and the meaning behind the song, but also what it means to you. I like to put my feelings towards certain songs, like a way to express yourself in a way that words sometimes. That and we all need a nice mellow song to help the mood sometimes. A song I have a similar connection to is Drive by Incubus.
ReplyDeleteI liked your song choices. Personally, I enjoy the song Already Won by Rod Wave featuring Lil Durk, and I also listen to Jhené Aiko. Her music is calming and meaningful.
